About
Inspired by his first art teacher, the maverick Wilf Lunn, Paul developed a love of drawing from an early age. He began recording ideas and observations in sketchbooks while never doubting he would follow a creative pathway. Paul was taught by Gerald French and Tom Wood at Batley College of Art and tutored in Fine Art by Roy Bizley and Mike Hale at Leicester Polytechnic where he specialised in printmaking. On leaving Leicester, Paul moved to London to continue his study at Goldsmiths College (University of London).
Paul has successfully combined teaching with a career as a freelance illustrator and printmaker, creating artwork for editorial, design, packaging, corporate literature and advertising.
Paul continues to record ideas through drawing and photography, always with the intention of developing printed images. Most recently, he has explored techniques and processes that incorporate both natural and man-made ephemera collected during ‘scavenging’ hunts.
‘I am interested in the experimental marks that result from working with discarded, foraged and sourced materials that would not ordinarily be deemed suitable for the traditional print process. Recycling packaging nets for the purpose of creating Dry-points and Collagraphs combined with unusual textures, create original outcomes. Shapes and silhouettes, recorded in photographs, tell the story of those who inhabited my lockdown world.’
Paul predominantly creates linoleum cuts while exploring the layering of colour, texture and transparency.
Books of drawings, collected scraps, travel souvenirs and memorabilia inform his ideas. A range of processes are used to manipulate the print surface as he creates images that reflect everyday moments, memories, places and personal experiences.
